Meet the maker

John Born started Humble Matter two years ago after escaping from the world of advertising —thanks to his amazing wife.

Not a New York native, but definitely a transplant who’s taken hold, John has lived in Brooklyn for the past 23 years.

In creating his ceramics, he draws from a wide array of influences to produce distinct pieces within a cohesive body of work.

An avid runner and beach lover, John can be found running around Prospect Park or on the beaches of Truro, MA with his family (aforementioned amazing wife, 2 brilliant but loud children, uber stylish step-daughter and charming son-in-law)...when he’s not in the studio.

John works out of Greenwich House Pottery (GHP), the premier ceramic facility in NYC, and the oldest non- profit ceramics studio in the country. He has a BFA from the University of Wisconsin—Madison.
